Veterans often worry: "If I file for an increase, will the VA reduce my current rating?" It's a valid fear, but there are rules that protect you.

The 5-Year Rule

If you have held a rating for 5 years or more, the VA cannot reduce it based on a single exam. They must prove "sustained improvement" over time. This makes your rating much safer.

The 10 and 20-Year Rules

  • 10 Years: The VA cannot sever "service connection" unless there was fraud.
  • 20 Years: Your rating is "locked." The VA cannot reduce it below its original level, even if your condition improves.

At Thank You For Your Service, we perform a risk assessment on every file. If we see a "young" rating that is at risk, we will advise you honestly before proceeding with new claims.

File with Confidence

We help you navigate the risks and protect your hard-earned rating while seeking the increase you deserve.
