Whether you need your DD-214 for a loan or your entire C-File to fight a claim denial, you need the right tool for the job. Do not waste months sending letters to the wrong address.
Know What You Are Looking For
The DD-214
"The Golden Ticket." This is your snapshot proof of service. You need this for VA Loans, GI Bill, and state benefits. It is usually 1-2 pages.
The C-File (Claims File)
"The Master Record." This contains everything the VA knows about you: Service records, medical records, C&P exams, and code sheets. You need this if you are appealing a denied claim.
Wait Time Comparison
Note: C-Files are FOIA requests and take significantly longer.
Get Your DD-214 via milConnect
Don't mail a form to the archives. Use the DoD's digital system (DPRIS).
Log In to milConnect
Go to milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil. Sign in with your DS Logon, Login.gov, or ID.me.
Select "DPRIS"
In the menu, look for "Correspondence/Documentation" and then click "Defense Personnel Records Information (DPRIS)".
Request & Download
Select the "Service" tab, check DD-214, and submit. It usually appears in your digital inbox on the site within 24-48 hours (sometimes minutes).
Requesting Your Full C-File
This is a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. It takes patience.
What's Inside a C-File?
Download VA Form 20-10206
This is the "FOIA / Privacy Act Request" form. Do not use a generic letter.
Fill It Out Correctly
In Section III, check "Claims File (C-File)". You want the whole thing.
Upload to QuickSubmit
Go to access.va.gov and use the "QuickSubmit" tool to upload the PDF directly. This is months faster than mailing it.
Wait for the CD
Yes, the VA often still mails a physical CD-ROM. Expect a 6-month wait.
milConnect vs. National Archives
milConnect (DPRIS)
Modern, digital, and fast. Best for Post-9/11 veterans and recent records.
National Archives (SF-180)
Old school. Necessary for older records (pre-2000s) that haven't been digitized yet.
