Seeing a private doctor? Need a copy of your labs? Don't wait weeks for the paperwork. Learn how to use the VA "Blue Button" to download your medical history instantly.
It is a universal symbol for "Download My Data". When you click it on VA.gov, it generates a single PDF or Text file containing your selected medical history.
Use your Login.gov or ID.me account. Navigate to the "Health Care" section.
Look for the link that says "VA Blue Button Report" (often under "Health Records"). It may redirect you to the My HealtheVet portal.
Crucial Step: You must select a Date Range (e.g., "Last 3 Months") and check the boxes for the data you want (e.g., "VA Lab Results"). Then click Download PDF.
Why fill out forms when you can click a button?
Average time to receive records.
Traditionally, getting records required filling out VA Form 10-5345 and waiting for the "Release of Information" office to mail you a packet.
Only use the formal request if you need Certified records for a legal case. For medical care, the Blue Button PDF is usually sufficient.
Best for doctor visits, personal tracking, and quick reference. Fast, free, and immediate.
Best for lawyers or court cases where a "Certified" stamp is legally required.
