5. How to Increase Your VA Back Pain Rating (Range of Motion)
Back pain is one of the most common veteran complaints, but it is often rated incorrectly. Many veterans are stuck at 10% or 20% despite being in severe pain.
It's Not About Pain, It's About Movement
The VA rates the spine (cervical and thoracolumbar) based primarily on Range of Motion (ROM), not pain levels.
- Forward Flexion 61-90 degrees: 10% rating
- Forward Flexion 31-60 degrees: 20% rating
- Forward Flexion 30 degrees or less: 40% rating
The "Flare-Up" Factor
Crucially, the VA must rate you based on your ROM during a flare-up or after repetitive use. If you can touch your toes on a good day, but can barely move on a bad day, the rating should reflect the bad day. Private doctors in our network understand this legal requirement (DeLuca criteria) and ensure your DBQ reflects your true functional loss.
