Whether you need your DD-214 for a loan or your entire C-File to fight a claim denial, you need the right tool for the job. Do not waste months sending letters to the wrong address. If you are preparing a claim before separation, use the VA BDD claim evidence checklist to keep separation paperwork, service records, exams, and private evidence in one reviewable packet.
Know What You Are Looking For
The DD-214
"The Golden Ticket." This is your snapshot proof of service. You need this for VA Loans, GI Bill, and state benefits. It is usually 1-2 pages.
The C-File (Claims File)
"The Master Record." This contains everything the VA knows about you: Service records, medical records, C&P exams, and code sheets. You need this if you are appealing a denied claim.
Different records, different requests
A DD-214 and a VA claims file are maintained through different systems. Turnaround varies by custodian, record age, request completeness, and current workload. TYFYS does not publish an estimated delivery time.
Get Your DD-214 via milConnect
Don't mail a form to the archives. Use the DoD's digital system (DPRIS).
Log In to milConnect
Go to milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil. Sign in with your DS Logon, Login.gov, or ID.me.
Select "DPRIS"
In the menu, look for "Correspondence/Documentation" and then click "Defense Personnel Records Information (DPRIS)".
Request & Download
Select the applicable service-record option and submit the request. Follow the current milConnect instructions and check the request status in the official system; delivery time varies.
Requesting Your Full C-File
This is a Freedom of Information Act or Privacy Act records request. Verify the current form and submission route before sending it.
What a C-File may contain
- Claim applications, decisions, and code sheets
- Service and medical evidence included in the claim record
- Examination reports and correspondence
Contents vary by claim history. Do not treat this list as a completeness guarantee.

This is the "FOIA / Privacy Act Request" form. Do not use a generic letter.
Fill It Out Correctly
In Section III, check "Claims File (C-File)". You want the whole thing.
Upload to QuickSubmit
Verify the current VA submission options and use the official route identified for records requests. Keep the submission confirmation.
Track the request
Delivery format and timing vary. Use the official status or contact route for the request rather than relying on a fixed estimate.
milConnect vs. National Archives
milConnect (DPRIS)
An official digital route that may contain service records available through DPRIS. Availability depends on the record and service history.
National Archives (SF-180)
An official records route that may be appropriate when the requested service record is not available through milConnect.
Request check
- Record: Identify the exact document and date range needed.
- Custodian: Use the official route for that record and service era.
- Status: Keep the confirmation and follow up through the official system.
