Back conditions are evaluated under VA rating criteria that consider documented functional loss and range of motion. Pain severity alone does not determine a rating.
It's Not About Pain, It's About Movement
The VA rates the spine (cervical and thoracolumbar) based primarily on Range of Motion (ROM), not pain levels.
- Forward Flexion 61-90 degrees: 10% rating
- Forward Flexion 31-60 degrees: 20% rating
- Forward Flexion 30 degrees or less: 40% rating
The "Flare-Up" Factor
Flare-ups and repetitive use can matter when a qualified examiner documents their effect on function. Describe the full pattern accurately and ask the examiner what measurements or estimates are medically supportable. TYFYS does not maintain a guaranteed provider network or control any provider's findings, and VA alone decides the rating.
Review the evidence
Compare your current records with the applicable rating criteria. If an updated examination may be appropriate, discuss that question with a qualified provider; no particular document or rating is guaranteed.
